She Does Not Need You
Song #378
Composition date: January 2008
Commentary Date: 3/11/2008
CD: n/a

Commentary:
A song inspired by the book "Women Who Run With The Wolves" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, commissioned by Lesley Roy.

It's a long story, I'll try to make it short:

I met an amazing woman and creative force the week before Christmas 2007. Her name is Lesley Roy and she is a self made woman, artist, business person, mystic, connector.... She saw the little YouTube commercial I did for the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce membership drive and she called me up out of the blue and told me she wanted to have me sign her up as a  Chamber member. So I did and then we arranged to meet at her Corvus Art Center gallery. http://web.mac.com/lesleyroy/iWeb/The%20Gallery/Welcome.html

Well, I had no idea who she was! I thought she was some local business person who wanted to join the Chamber of Commerce!

It turns out she has a whole line of high end ceramics and creative designs that sold through retailers like Neiman Marcus. That's a whole other story.

At some point she let go of that business and opened a gallery. Not just an art gallery.

I walk in and these huge, powerful paintings just totally grabbed me and shook me emotionally and spiritually. They're by renowned artist Dr. Ala Bashir. He's an Iraqi national treasure. He was head of a major hospital in Bagdad and walked the edge of many life and death situations. It's kind of a long story and you can learn more at this link http://web.mac.com/lesleyroy/iWeb/The%20Gallery/Welcome.html

But I was so floored by these paintings that I told Lesley "I have to sing a song for you called 'Target'." She just so happened to have a guitar and so I played it. She "got" that my music came from a deep place...Well we became fast friends. A week or so later, we had a deep long conversation about "Women Who Run With The Wolves" and she asked me to write a song to go along with a series of paintings she was currently working on.

It's about the wild woman archetype that shows up in a lot of ancient stories. It's the powerful, magical feminine that we somehow have lost in our modern culture. I could go on for a lot longer but I'll stop here and let you have a listen.

The moral of the story? You never know who you'll meet through your local chamber of commerce!

She Does Not Need You

(She Prefers the Company of Wolves and Crows)           #378  January 2008

She prefers the company of wolves and crows

She knows the world nose to nose

She is feral, fierce and unafraid of lightening

She wears a different disguise at every sighting

She can taste you at some distance on the breeze

And with one look release you from your dis-ease

She will shout at you to get you to breathe

For your own sake learn to breathe!

She does not need you x3

She can paint you into or out of your existence

What you call intelligence is merely resistance

She demands that you abandon your defenses

See the world through a brand new pair of lenses

She is warrior, healer, mystic, daughter, mother, lover, sister

She is the magical entrance into the world where we are all visitors

She’ll break your heart open and you will howl with joy and wonder

She will then offer you up to the thunder...

She does not need you x3

She would prefer it if you turned off all the lights

Make friends with your shadow in the gathering of twilight

Remove your shoes for the ground you walk on is holy

It is as Holy as much as it is muddy

She is not interested in your opinion

She will never submit to your dominion

But she does invite you to dance until you drop

The old routines that caused you to stop…

She does not need you x3:

We are running out of time

Move your body, change your mind

Plug yourself into the divine

And maybe she will give you a sign

Surrender to the force of her persuasion

Her wildness has a certain contagion

She dares you to cross the vital threshold

Do it now before you are too old

She does not need you x3
