Gabriel's Song Of Delight
Song #81,
Composition date: Sept.-Nov. 1985
Recording Date:
#1 - Live Unknown CD 1989
,
#2 - Extended Instrumental version 1986
Commentary Date: 12/8/2007

Commentary:
this is one of my personal favorites. I love singing it between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It captures for me that time of year in New England. The trees have lost their leaves. It gets dark earlier and earlier. There's a kind of crispness in the air and people retreat inside. This song began during a Hurricane that somehow made it all the way up the coast to New York/New England. At one point I looked out my window and the stop sign on the corner was waving wildly back and forth...I was 24 years old, about to turn 25. I was married. My son Andrew was 6 months old.

There are two versions here. #1 was recorded as part of a concert that become a Cd called "Live Unknown" #2 is a long forgotten take that I recorded in 1986. The main difference is that in the earlier version (1986 I did an extended guitar instrumental before I started singing the lyrics. Let me know what you think.  -Mark

Gabriel's Song of Delight

Shadows dance beneath the streetlight

A stop sign quivers in the wind

The light turns green on Main street

Giving no indication of the end...

A leaf scrapes broken on the asphalt

A sidewalk crumbles in the cold

Young girls giggle down the avenue

Repeating what someone else was told...

Oh most silent night

Oh most holy night

Ancient twilight of trumpets and angels

Gabriel's song of delight

A deisel downshifts on the evening breeze

Someone's doing dishes downstairs

Life burns brightly in the windows

And scatters out into the falling air...

Oh most silent night

Oh most holy night

Ancient twilight of trumpets and angels

Gabriel's song of delight

November gives thanks for the harvest

December gives thanks for the sun

January comes begging

And takes something from every one...

Oh most silent night

Oh most holy night

Ancient twilight of trumpets and angels

Gabriel's song of delight

Alleluia, alleluia....
